Sendmail Installation

Due to the complex nature of UNIX, make sure that you are familiar with your system before continuing. If you have any questions about installation, please contact your system administrator. The basic installation is as follows; this may not work for all users.

  1. Create a file called .forward in your home directory. The contents of the file are as follows:

    \username,
    "| finger nm_notifyuser@machinename.company.com"

Where you will replace machinename with the name associated with your machine's IP address or DNS name.

OR
  1. If you are using procmail, place the following line near the top of your .procmailrc file:

    COMSAT=biff@machinename.company.com

Where you will replace machinename with the name associated with your machine's IP address or DNS name.

  2. Configure NotifyMail to use port 512:
    • For Macintosh, enter 512 in the port field in the Advanced tab of the preferences.
    • For Windows, enter 512 in the port field and Check the Use UDP checkbox
OR
  1. Download nmfinger.c and compile it on your UNIX machine using:
    gcc -o nmfinger nmfinger.c
(this may vary slightly depending on your flavor of UNIX)

  2. Create a file called .forward in your home directory. The contents of the file are as follows:

    \username,
    "| nmfinger machinename.company.com"

Where you will replace machinename with the name associated with your machine's IP address or DNS name.

System Administrators

If you would like to enable NotifyMail for many users at your site, you can compile nmfinger.c (if using the last method), and place it in a global local like /usr/local/bin. In addition, if you are running sendmail with restrictions on running application (smrsh), you will need to place a symbolic link to finger or nmfinger in /usr/adm/sm.bin/ (or wherever you have configured smrsh to look for applications allowed to be run from sendmail).

If you have any questions about the installation for Sendmail, please contact our Support Department. While we don't claim to be sendmail experts, we have configured or have helped a large number of sites configure sendmail to work with NotifyMail.
